The Story of Bob Marley�s Death Bob Marley, one of the most influential musicians in reggae history, faced a difficult battle during the final years of his life. In 1977, while playing football in Paris, Marley injured his toe. Doctors later discovered that the injury was connected to a rare form of skin cancer called acral lentiginous melanoma, which had developed under his toenail. Marley initially continued making music and performing despite his diagnosis. He underwent surgery, but the cancer eventually spread to other parts of his body. Even while seriously ill, he remained committed to his music and continued working, recording, and performing whenever his health allowed. In 1980, Marley performed what became his final concert in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, during his Uprising Tour. His health continued to deteriorate afterward. While traveling back to Jamaica, he became critically ill and was taken to a hospital in Miami, Florida, for treatment.
